Someone once called inquiring about training at Results.
We scheduled his first session, and as usual, I was ready to welcome him.
As soon as he walked in, I noticed something right away — he was really excited about training with us. Credit card went flying, and we immediately scheduled his next session.
Now, don’t get me wrong — I like seeing people happy to train with us.
However, this time it was different. The excitement was a bit over the top. Something felt off. My gut was telling me something wasn’t right.
This can’t be that exciting.
I know we’re good — really good — but no one should be that excited to do something they wouldn’t normally do on their own.
Fast forward a month.
That excitement slowly started turning into complaints.
The happiness turned into a pain in the ass — faster than anticipated.
Before you know it, the new customer quit working out altogether.
The reason?
The music wasn’t up to his liking.
The parking had compact spaces.
Are these serious concerns? They can be.
But it seemed abnormal for someone who was so excited not too long ago to be completely derailed by the wrong genre of music or compact parking spots.
That moment — and many others like it — made me realize something important:
Hype and passion fade. Easily.
Sometimes as fast as love in an arranged marriage.
The love turned into hate before he could even break a sweat.
I’ve seen this happen with passion over and over again.
My wrestling coach used to tell me,
“If you want to kill your passion, turn it into a business.”
Especially when it comes to changing habits or lifestyles.
We’re all hyped up for change on a full stomach.
Not so much when we have to wake up early, feel sore, and drag ourselves to the gym.
Don’t get me wrong — there’s nothing wrong with having passion or being excited about your goals.
But goals without structure are like a car without a steering wheel.
Discipline is like bumpers on a bowling lane.
It helps us get the most out of our effort, even when our aim isn’t perfect.
The same way hard work beats talent any day, discipline, structure, and standards are the pillows and the foundation of every real success story.
So next time you think about your goals, don’t let excitement carry all the load.
Use it to build structure around your goals — a safety net for when things get hard and motivation fades. Because it will.
Work on establishing when you’re going to work on your goals.
More often than not, small daily steps prove to be far more effective than big, emotional time blocks.
Before you know it, small steps will take you farther than big leaps.
Think of goal structure as the quarterback — and you’re the receiver.
A great structure increases your chances of success.
And don’t forget regular performance assessments.
How are you doing?
Where are you in relation to your goals?
Take time to assess your performance.
Reward yourself when it’s earned.
Adjust when things don’t go as planned.
That’s not failure.
That’s strategy.
If you’re relying on motivation to change your body, habits, or life — you’re gambling.
At Results, we don’t chase hype.
We build structure, standards, and discipline that hold up when motivation disappears.
If you’re ready to stop starting over and start building real results,
come in, get assessed, and let’s build a structure that works — even on your worst days.
Because motivation is optional.
Principles are not.
