Can You Do Personal Training with an 8-Year-Old?

Absolutely. I have an 8-year-old daughter, and I’ve been training her on and off for about two years now.

How? You might ask.

Simple—kids love to play. They run, jump, skip, and climb naturally. The key is to tap into that energy and turn movement into something fun and engaging. But here’s the real secret: personality matters more than the workout itself.

Every child is different. Some respond to jokes and playfulness, while others thrive on structure. Some need fast-paced routines to stay engaged, while others do better with slower, more deliberate movements. The trick is to figure out what feels like “play” to them and build the training around that.

Of course, exercise routines should match their age, strength, skill level, and attention span—you can’t train an 8-year-old like you would a teenager or an adult. But I’ve worked with young athletes as young as 9, and I’ve seen firsthand how quickly they adapt and grow.

Training Beyond the Gym

Training isn’t just about what happens in the gym—it’s also about building discipline and good habits at home. This works especially well for kids who have a goal, whether it’s getting stronger, improving in sports, or just feeling more confident in their bodies.

One thing I do with my young clients is tie their fitness goals to everyday habits. Want to get stronger? Then start by making your bed every morning. Want to build discipline? Then take responsibility for things like washing the dishes. Small actions build a stronger mindset, just like reps in the gym build stronger muscles.

I always tell kids:
“Becoming a better version of yourself means becoming a different person. You know when that starts to happen? It’s when your parents look at you after you’ve done something new—something great—and they ask themselves: ‘Who is this child?’”

And guess what? Your mom and dad are the ones who spend the most time with you. They’re the first to notice the change. When they see you becoming more responsible, stronger, and more confident, that’s when you know you’re on the right track.

That’s when I know real growth is happening. That’s when they’re getting stronger, smarter, more skillful, and closer to their goals.

So yes, you can absolutely do personal training with an 8-year-old. Just make sure it feels like play, meets them where they are, and helps them build habits that go beyond the gym.
